Sarah was courtside at the New York Knicks basketball game Christmas day. Yes, that is John McEnroe deflecting the ball that headed in their direction.

And that’s McEnroe’s daughter, Anna, with him.

More about Sarah’s Israel gig

Posted by Gator on December 20th, 2014

This excerpt from today’s Ha’aretz (Israel) article has some quotes that weren’t previously  published. (Sarah was accepting an achievement award Thursday from the 16th annual Jerusalem Jewish Film Festival.)

In preparation for her visit, Silverman, who came on stage in skinny jeans and a puffy ski jacket, told the crowd that she had designed and mailed some peace-themed T-shirts to – the first sign of a problem – her sister’s old address.

“Yeah, I sent them to Suzie’s old address,” she sighed, referring to her sister Susan Silverman, a reform rabbi who lives in Jerusalem with her husband and five children, including said Bar Mitzvah boy. “So whoever lives there has $400-worth of T-shirts I made.”

The T-shirts, Silverman continued brightly, read — in Hebrew and Arabic, with English on the back — “Be brave and love each other.”

“I was so proud of it,” she recounted. “I told my boyfriend, ‘I made these T-shirts!’” And he is like ‘Umm, that’s nice,’ And I’m like ‘what?’ And he’s like, ‘What, this girl from West Hollywood comes from her doorman building to Israel and says (whiny voice) ‘You guys, come-on!!!! Just get along!’”

“I think it’s a little more complicated,” she concluded mock-sheepishly. “I think maybe if I was a Palestinian or an Israeli and saw you in that T-shirt, I would be like ‘Fuck you.’

“But I brought some anyway,” she concluded. “Because I think they look good on my boobs.”

During her previous – and first – visit to Israel three years ago, she asked an audience in Tel Aviv whether there were any Palestinians in the crowd.

“It was such a stupid question!” she reflected in her talk. “I was so naïve. Yael, the show manager said, ‘You know, a Palestinian COULD come here if they really wanted, but it would take them about eight hours, you know, getting detained along the way and all.”

Silverman noted she did not so much grow up “Jewish” as “Jew-ee” in New Hampshire, and that when her sister Susan told their dad she wanted to be a rabbi, he said, ‘I didn’t know you were Jewish!’ (“My sister always says it best,” she added. “We all thought growing up Jewish in New Hampshire just meant you were a Democrat!”)

“I’m not very worldly,” she shrugged. “This is my second time in Israel and I’m like ‘Wait! This is how far from my apartment?” She paused. “But I made it.”

Sarah honored & interviewed at Israel Film Fest

Posted by Gator on December 19th, 2014

While Sarah is in Israel to attend her nephew’s bar mitzvah, Sarah also was a featured guest December 18 at the Jerusalem Jewish Film Festival. This is primarily Renee Ghert-Zand’s Times of Israel report on her appearance, with some additional information from Debra Kamin’s 12/19/14 Variety article:

121914JFilmFest1epSarah Silverman and her raunchy brand of comedy lit up the Jerusalem Cinematheque as she made a special appearance at the Jerusalem Jewish Film Festival on Thursday evening, the third night of Hanukkah.

The provocative funnywoman accepted an achievement award from the festival for her contributions to film, television and new media, and also engaged in a freewheeling on-stage interview with Israeli comedic actress and TV host Einav Galili that followed a screening of her 2013 HBO special, “We Are Miracles.”

Prior to the screening, the comedian was honored with an achievement award, presented by Cinematheque founder and Jerusalem film maven Lia Van Leer, who told Silverman, “You are a miracle!”  Silverman was given a gold Chanukah menorah, which she joked looked like a pair of brass knuckles before slipping it onto her right hand to prove her point.

The standing-room-only audience, comprising mainly young people drinking beer from bottles, was clearly appreciative of Silverman and predisposed to her comedy, which involves an abundant use of expletives and tackles controversial topics like racism, sexism and religion.

With regard to the latter two topics, Silverman, dressed in skinny jeans and a puffy ski jacket, did not mince words in expressing her anger at discrimination against women at the Western Wall, where she had been earlier that evening. The comedian had joined her sister, Jerusalem resident Rabbi Susan Silverman, and other Women of the Wall activists for Hanukkah candle lighting at the Wall’s women’s section. (more…)

Sarah approves of Griffin on FPolice

Posted by Gator on December 16th, 2014

KathyGriffinAndSarahP_2008The N.Y. Daily News reported this recent comment from Sarah saying Kathy Griffin makes sense to be Joan Rivers’s replacement on Fashion Police:

Sarah Silverman couldn’t imagine anyone else but Kathy Griffin taking over “Fashion Police,” following the death of legendary comic Joan Rivers. “The thing that made it so great was that Joan was so over-the-top funny, so hard-core, and Kathy seems like the right fit,” Silverman told Confidenti@l at Milk Studios in Los Angeles. “No one is going to replace Joan; Kathy will make it her own.” Silverman recently praised Rivers at the Hollywood Reporter’s 23rd annual Women in Entertainment Breakfast.
