Sarah contributes to “anti-occupation” Passover book

jubileehaggadahJ1Just published is The Jubilee Haggadah, which includes contributions from thirty writers– one of whom is Sarah, and another is her sister, Susan– “proclaiming liberty” for all, including the Palestinians. A haggadah is the book of readings that makes up the ceremony called a seder, which is the Jewish Passover festive meal. The Jubilee Haggadah, published by the organization SISO (“Save Israel, Stop the Occupation”) on this 50th (what the bible calls “jubilee”) year since the 1967 War in which Israel won pieces of land that had previously been Palestinian. Passover is a holiday that commemorates liberty, and the bible says in a jubilee year “you shall proclaim liberty throughout the land for all its inhabitants.”

The American Jewish newspaper site, Forward.com, described Sarah’s piece this way:

Comedian Sarah Silverman spoke out against Israel’s military occupation in a new Passover Haggadah timed with the 50th anniversary of the 1967 Six Day War, when Israel conquered the West Bank.  “Of all the people, Jews know the bitterness of being oppressed — and not being in our own country,” she wrote. “That’s what makes the occupation all so ironic. Sometimes it’s hard to tell the difference between right and wrong, the situation is complicated and scary, but I’m guessing oppression will always prove to be on the wrong side of history.”
