Sarah speaks at opening night of Democratic Convention

Sarah made a persuasive and passionate speech at the Democratic National Convention on its opening night (7/25/16), in which, after reminding the crowd of her emphatic admiration for Bernie Sanders and his positions, she stated, “Hillary is our democratic nominee and I will proudly vote for her…with gusto, as I continue to be inspired and moved to action by the ideals set forth by Bernie, who will never stop fighting for us.”

Unfortunately, some Bernie Sanders supporters in the arena (those who had vowed that if Bernie wasn’t to be the Democratic candidate, they just wouldn’t vote) were loudly critical in response to Sarah’s words. So Sarah stepped back to the microphone afterwards to scold, “To the ‘Bernie or Bust’ people: You’re being ridiculous.” And that’s what went viral, rather than attention to the indisputable accuracy and sense of her speech.

Here’s Sarah’s entire appearance, from her first words, through her speech, and including the extended section afterward in which she and Franken were told to fill time until Paul Simon was finished setting up for his performance.

And this is Sarah with Al Franken being interviewed on CNN after the speeches were over on Monday night. [Nothing too interesting in that interview; for diehard Sarah fans only.]

It’s unfortunate that the headlines about your speech at the DNC are all focused on your unscripted remark to the “Bernie or Bust” howlers… because in all honesty, you killed it tonight! Your characterization of Donald Trump as a spoiled rich third-grader was classic, and by not making the lead of the story have anything to do with the contents of your *actual* speech, the media really missed the point. Keep strong, keep fighting, and keep speaking out! I’m with you… and of course, “her”

My husband and I saw you speak last night at the Democratic National Convention on TV and you were great. What are the chances of coming to Orlando, Florida? We would love to see you again, as this was our introduction to you as a comedian.

Nice Audrey Hepburn pose at the DNC, you’re smart and funny.

I am so glad you are on the planet. You have made me laugh intellectually and cringe and cry at the same time…your view of the world is right where I want to a have a front row seat…it is hard to say these cliche things to you because you dice and slice suckers like me…but I truly am thankful you are ok…it is a bit more personal for me because my nephew at 37 died from what happened to you. He didn’t get treatment for his supposed “sore throat” because you see, he was with all of us at the funeral for my 38 year old niece, his cousin….He was out of state…didn’t want to cause commotion going to a doctor or hospital when everyone was running around with wakes and funerals and cemeteries….guess he thought he would ride it out until he got home from NY to NC where he lived…..instead he died in a beautiful hotel room on Long Island the night before his cousins funeral…so when you say you are thankful….no greater words have ever come from your mouth….because you were that close…We go on, don’t we….we laugh at the worst of it because it is like a form of killing it…I get that in your comedy…re: rape and illness and all of it….not everyone can….we gasp and laugh at the same time…good for us…we are alive…You and Al were the best thing on tv last night….I , too, felt the Bern…wish we didn’t have to put cream on it but we do…..and we go on…..just thank you Sarah for being..
