At the American Music Awards in Los Angeles (CA) November 24, Sarah stood out gorgeously in her yellow (reportedly a Lela Rose dress, Greymer shoes, a Lancaster bag, and Swarovski jewels), as well as in her comments.
Presenting the award for Favorite Album, Soul/R&B – Sarah reacted to the nominees being Rihanna, Robin Thicke, and Justin Timberlake, by taking a jab at racism, observing that one of the three was “a soulful woman of color” while the other two were “a white kid from The Mickey Mouse Club and the son of the dad from Growing Pains.” (Lots of subsequent online kudos for her having dared to say what many there were thinking.) “I don’t know who will win,” stated Sarah, “but I do know who should find this most ironic if she loses.”
Then when winner Timberlake arrived at the podium with “shmutz on your cheek,” she did the old spit cheek rub. In his acceptance, Timberlake joked that it was the “first time I’ve ever been racially profiled by a white woman.” (Timberlake ended up taking home three American Music Awards, including Favorite Male Artist, Pop/Rock. Rihanna won the first-ever AMA Icon Award.)
