Backtrack: Sarah at Democratic Convention 2008

Posted by Gator on December 29th, 2012

Just posted three entries about Sarah’s emceeing/standup gig at the Manifest Hope Exhibition concert August 27, 2008, during the Democratic National Convention in Denver.

TMZ posted December 26 one of their paparazzi confronting Sarah (and an unknown African American woman) on the street about Quentin Tarantino’s new movie, Django Unchained (about which Spike Lee has said, “I’m not gonna see it … It’s disrespectful to my ancestors.”).  Here’s the full text of their comments, which have gone viral, often skewed as endorsement of using the n-word in film.

TMZ: [Django Unchained] is catching flack from Spike Lee and a lot of other people for using the n-word 110 times they counted. What do you guys think about– how do you feel about that?

SARAH: Doesn’t it take place during slavery?

TMZ: Yes, it does.

SARAH: Wouldn’t it be odd if they didn’t have that horrific word in it?

WOMAN: I saw the movie a couple weeks ago…They did use the n-word a lot, but it was– like– they needed to. They were dead smack in the middle of slavery with lots of bloody, gory violence, and comedy– I mean, this is Quentin Tarantino we’re talking about. Why would he take that out and play something safe?

SARAH: I think slave owners said it a lot. That’s why it has a stigma still today. Isn’t that–

WOMAN: It hurts, though, it’s true.

SARAH: But I haven’t seen it. But, you know, I love Spike Lee. We were just talking about School Daze. But he’s got a lot of mishegoss with a lot of art. I think you can’t really tell art what to do. It doesn’t really make sense, but I think you know what I’m talking about.

WOMAN: …It makes sense, it makes sense. You can’t tell art what to do. You heard it here first, from Sarah Silverman!

On Dining with Doug and Karen podcast 12/22/12

Posted by Gator on December 28th, 2012

Sarah joined Doug Benson (comic of celebrity-frequented “Doug Loves Movies” vidcast fame) in Episode 14 of his foodie podcast series. Settle back, Sarah fans, because it’s 95 minutes, including chef Andy Windak teaching a vegan recipe. (Sarah clarifies, “I’m a vegetarian [not a vegan]. I don’t eat meat. I don’t eat chicken. I’ve never tried fish, because I have a nose.”)

Backtrack: At 10/12/11 Theron Africa benefit

Just posted an appearance we missed: Sarah at a benefit for the Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project on October 12, 2011. Includes article and two photos (Sarah quite spiffy).

Vanity Fair posts Sarah’s whole letter to Apatow

Posted by Gator on December 15th, 2012

Sarah’s role in the January 2013 “first ever” comedy issue of Vanity Fair is a “letter” to the editor of the VF special issue, Judd Apatow, and accom-panying satirical photo. Vanity Fair posted it 12/14/12 as a preview of the issue, which is on newsstands now.

Dear Judd,
I’d love to help with your magazine project, but I am unable to for several reasons.
I’m really, really busy and really, really popular. So right off the bat, that’s a tough squeeze time-wise.
I can’t say I’m familiar with this publication, unless it’s connected to the super-fancy paper-plate-and-plasticware company I love so much. Still, I’m sure you understand I can’t be writing art for a paper-plate-company magazine.
O.K. I just Googled it and I do know this magazine—and as it turns out I have a big beef with them. Whenever they have a young-up-and-coming-movie-starlets-of-tomorrow cover, I’m blatantly snubbed. Am I not good enough to lounge in a vintage gown from the 1930s, lazily draped on a chaise, pretending to be in the same room as 14 other cut-and-pasted actresses in similar garb and furniture and poses? I was born to do that, and this magazine took that from me and continues to take that from me with every passing year. And why? Why am I repeatedly overlooked? Because I’m a polarizing Jew? Or is it because of what we all know but are afraid to say: I’m just too goddamned pretty?
We may never know, but what I do know is this: You will have to do your comedy-issue curating sans me. I hope this doesn’t hurt sales too much.

Will do London show 2/9/13

Posted by Gator on December 13th, 2012

Having just completed two successful big stand-up appearances in Australia, Sarah has booked a London appearance for February. Tickets go on sale 12/14/12 at 9 a.m. for her February 9 show at the Bloomsbury Theatre. It will be a paperless admission, so to get in you will have to show the credit card you used for the purchase.

Fans will recall that Sarah’s last show in London, four years ago, was not well received.
